उसे तो जेल जाना ही है!

चाहे कोई सुहाने पल में, या फिर सूनेपन में,
उसने कभी कुछ पी भी लिया तो—
उसे तो जेल जाना ही है, जेल जाना ही है।

चाहे कोई रूमानी पल में, या फिर भोलेपन में,
उसने कभी इश्क़ लड़ा भी लिया तो—
उसे तो जेल जाना ही है, जेल जाना ही है।

चाहे कोई बेबसी में, या फिर बेकारी में,
उसने कभी अपना जिस्म बेच भी लिया तो—
उसे तो जेल जाना ही है, जेल जाना ही है।

राष्ट्रगान देशभक्ति का प्रमाण नहीं है—
यह सोचकर वो कभी चुप भी रह लिया तो—
उसे तो जेल जाना ही है, जेल जाना ही है।

चाहे भूख से, या फिर शौक से,
उसने कभी कोई ख़ास चीज़ खा भी ली तो—
उसे तो जेल जाना ही है, जेल जाना ही है।

इन सबसे अगर वो कभी बच भी गया तो,
पानी की कमी से या सुलभ शौचालय की कतार से थककर—
खुले में कभी कर भी लिया तो—
उसे तो जेल जाना ही है, जेल जाना ही है।

इसमें क्या बड़ी बात है, यारो—
उसे तो जेल जाना ही है!

ताकि—
मुनाफ़े के नाम पर देश को लूटने वाले,
विकास के नाम पर पर्यावरण को रौंदने वाले,
वैश्वीकरण के नाम पर परदेस में धन जमा करने वाले,
सत्ता के लिए खरीदी-बिक्री में लगने वाले,
प्रगति के नाम पर लोगों को उजाड़ने वाले,
धर्म के नाम पर ज़हर घोलने वाले—
फिर भी
देश का झंडा ऊँचाइयों से लहराने वाले,
“जन गण मन अधिनायक…” दहाड़ने वाले,
जेल से यूँ ही बचते ही रहें,
जेल से यूँ ही बचते ही रहें!

अब तो समझो, दोस्तों—
उसे तो जेल जाना ही है,
जेल जाना ही है…

Whether in a pleasant moment, or in loneliness,
If she ever had a drink—
She is bound to go to jail, bound to go to jail.

Whether in a romantic moment, or in innocence,
If she ever dared to fall in love—
She is bound to go to jail, bound to go to jail.

Whether in helplessness, or in unemployment,
If she ever sold her own body—
She is bound to go to jail, bound to go to jail.

If she ever thought
That singing the national anthem is not proof of patriotism,
And chose to remain silent—
She is bound to go to jail, bound to go to jail.

Whether out of hunger, or simply by choice,
If she ever ate something forbidden—
She is bound to go to jail, bound to go to jail.

If she somehow escaped all this,
But, exhausted by water scarcity or the long queue at a public toilet,
Relieved herself in the open—
She is bound to go to jail, bound to go to jail.

What is so surprising in that, friends?
She is bound to go to jail!

So that—
Those who loot the nation in the name of profit,
Those who trample the environment in the name of development,
Those who stash wealth abroad in the name of globalization,
Those who trade loyalties for power,
Those who uproot people in the name of progress,
Those who spread poison in the name of religion—
And yet
Wave the national flag from great heights,
Roar “Jana Gana Mana Adhinayaka…” with pride—
May continue to escape prison,
May continue to escape prison!

Now understand, friends—
She is the one who must go to jail,
Must go to jail…
